Head in the Clouds

Matthew's mind is always going a million miles a minute. I think that is one of the reasons he takes forever to fall asleep at night. There is no denying the kid is bright. However, the frustrating thing is that sometimes it's hard to get that busy mind to focus. He seems to always have his head in the clouds.
Whether he is at school, church or at home I fear that he sometimes misses things because he isn't paying attention. I guess he feels he has more important things to think about. However, when he is focused and interested in things he is right there. During those times he will astonish me with the depth of the thoughts he expresses about whatever we may be talking about.
At church last Sunday they were talking about the resurrection in primary. I peeked in a few times and it looked like Matthew was paying attention, but you never know. Well, it turns out he was.
He had to give the scripture and prayer for closing exercises in primary. On a side note, he was so excited to carry around his dad's old scriptures. As he went up to the little pulpit he set them down with a loud thud and then, when he was through, he closed them with another loud thud. He had a, "Aren't I so lucky to have these big scriptures?!" look on his face. It made me smile. :)
Now back to the point of this post. So, Matthew was paying attention in primary and his prayer proved it! As he walked up to the pulpit I expected and speedy, half-hearted prayer but I was pleasantly surprised. He expressed thanks for being at church and then he went on to bless those who were involved in the "tornado" as he called it.(referring to the recent earthquake which we talked about briefly at home.) He asked a blessing on those who were injured and asked that those who died would be resurrected and be with their families forever. It was very sweet and heartfelt and I was beaming with pride.
I could tell that he had listened that day and had taken it to heart. I love moments like that. They reaffirm to me the importance of teaching our children, reading scriptures, having FHE, etc. You never know when your kids are listening. I know I am bragging about Matthew but I'm just exercising right as a parent. I am so proud of him and love to see his little spirit grow and learn, especially about spiritual things. It is amazing!

I've always known that Matt is close to the spirit. He is being taught well.

It is always nice when through all the energy and distraction, somehow, the "good stuff" still makes it's way into their little minds. It is especially nice when they can hold onto that information and repeat it! I am sure you were so happy! He is a good boy. Cute, too! :-)

That is encouraging. I often feel the same way about Jeff--he can focus on things that he really likes, computer games for instance--but I wonder how much he takes in at church or school. I guess we'll just keep trying to teach him, and hope that he surprises us, too!
