A True Treasure

Ruth W. Moore
Lonestar Pattern

I love how the size of the stitches are uneven so you can see that it is hand stitched.

My grandma is a master quilter.  The pictured quilt is entirely HAND STITCHED!  It is overwhelming just to think of it.  How many hours were poured into this quilt?  My grandma has made dozens of quilts in her lifetime.  Last year she moved to Utah from California.  She has lived in California since she was a girl.  It was very difficult for her to leave her home.  She was getting on in years and it was no longer safe for her to live alone.  She lives in the same town as my parents now in an assisted living facility.  She has her own room with her own bathroom.  She is involved in a lot of things from Bingo to weekly scripture study with some of the other widows.  I know she loves being close to my dad and seeing him daily.
Recently my parents went to her home in California to start packing things up and getting it ready to sell.  They came back to Utah with all her quilts and all of her grandchildren get one of their own.  This past weekend I was in Utah and my mom brought me the one in the picture.  I love it!!  On the backing my grandma sewed a piece of fabric that had, handwritten in pen by her, the address to her cabin in Wyoming and these words....

This quilt made entirely by Ruth W. Moore
Pattern: Lone Star
Pieced by Strip piecing method
Finished July 1990
Second Quilt Made by Ruth W. Moore

Although my grandparents lived in California they had a cabin my grandpa had built in Wyoming.  They would spend their summers there.  The grandkids always took turns spending some of the summer there, 2 at a time.  I love that I've spent time in that cabin and can visualize her quilting away her summer in the cabin that my grandpa built with his own hands.
I am so grateful for this quilt and was so excited to see the piece of fabric she had written on. What a treasure to have this as a memory of my grandma!
