Harlin Family Update

This new school year has been going smoothly for the most part.  It is always great for everyone to get back into a routine.  I like schedules as long as they aren't too busy.  With kids getting older things tend to be busier then I like but I try to adapt.

I do miss the days of all my kids being little with nothing pressing to do.  We still had a schedule then.  We had specific naptimes, bedtimes, weekly cousin playdates but that's about it.  It was simple and I liked that.

Now, we have soccer, scouts, homework and other things thrown in there.  It's a little hectic but doable.  Here is a run down of what we are up to.

Tyson-  He is still working at Idaho Power and is happy there.  As happy as he can be at a desk job I guess.  He would much rather be doing his own thing.  The company treats him pretty well and we are grateful he has a secure job.  He is a counselor in the bishopric of our ward.  Getting the call was a little intimidating for him.  He always questions himself as leadership material but I think he is more of a leader than he thinks.  He is approachable, sincere and has a genuine concern for others.  He doesn't pass judgement on others and tries to see the good in everyone.  I love those things about him and I think it makes him right for where he is now.  He loves riding his bike to work every morning.  It is something he enjoys and it helps him feel more healthy too.  He can be pretty busy but he loves to spend as much time with the boys as he can.  He likes to take the older 2 mountain biking.  He likes to take all of them fishing, riding on the greenbelt, swimming at the YMCA....whatever is active and out of the house.  He also reads to them in there room every night.  They get cozy in their beds and he turns off there light and reads with his headlamp.  It is a great way to help the kids chill out and get ready to sleep.  This is a new tradition that we all love.  So far they've read the Hobbit and are almost finished with The Fellowship of the Ring.  After that series is over he wants to read Hatchet to them. He also LOVE, LOVES our family rides down the greenbelt.  We all do.  Tyson and I have been wanting to have a date night heading downtown on the greenbelt but have yet to do that.  We will have to do it at least once before the weather is too cold for sure.

Rachelle-  Things are busy, busy for me like any mom.  I try and keep things as smooth and organized as I can.  A lot of times it is organized chaos but with 4 kids it's to be expected.  For the most part the schedule I make seems to work so that's a good thing.  I try to keep up on what my kids are doing at school, making sure they are staying on task.  I stay home with my kids and am grateful for that.  They really need me there to send them off and welcome them home.
Currently I like to unwind by watching something on netflix, reading a good book, and listening to or playing music.  I also love to look at blogs and magazines with ideas for decorating my home, upcycling and DIY stuff.  My sister used to tell her husband that she was the homemaker so let her make her home.  I LOVE to decorate my home and am always excited about little projects that don't take a lot of time but add just what I want.  It's fun and therapeutic for me.

Matt-(10)  Matt is enjoying 5th grade so far.  He is liking his teacher.  His teacher seems to be very kind and willing to work with Matt.  I like that a lot. So far he is LOVING orchestra. He loves to fiddle around on his cello.  Sometimes I need to remind him that it's time to practice for real and not just try to imitate piano guys stuff. :)  He is busy with scouts and always thinking about the next triathlon he can be involved in.  I like it because we let him run a few a year and it's enough to satisfy his desire to do it and not too much to get very busy or overwhelming.  Right now he loves to run, mountain bike, fish, swim, and play on his cello.  He makes me laugh and has a good sense of humor.

Kaleb-(8)  He is liking 3rd grade.  I am not surprised because he is pretty easy when it comes to school.  He gets his homework done without much complaint and seems happy with any teacher he gets....so far.  This year he has Matt's old 3rd grade teacher and I love her.  She has great incentive programs that really motivate the kids.  Kaleb is busy with soccer.  He seems to have a knack for it and really enjoys it.  He is also starting scouts.  He's been looking forward to that for a while as he's watched his brother involvement in it.  He is a great help with his little brothers.  He also loves to create with his legos and has become a great reader.

Ian-(4)  Life is good for Ian right now.  He finally gets to go to school like his brothers.  He is in preschool twice a week for a few hours and LOVES it!  He is really thriving and enjoys his teacher and new friends.  He likes feeling like a big boy and having his own school to go to.  It's nice because he is still home with me most of the time, which I like, before kindergarten.  Ian enjoys being a big brother a little to much sometimes.  He doesn't give Kellen much breathing room but I think he likes having a playmate while his brothers are at school.  Ian is my little shadow.  He follows me all over the house.  If he is occupied and I leave the room it isn't long before he notices and comes to find me.  Another reason preschool is a good way to help him transition into kindergarten.  Ian loves to play with his brothers, wrestle with his dad and play outside with the neighbor kids.  He is so hilarious to us right now and we could just eat him up.

Kellen-(18months)  We love having Kellen in our family.  Most of the time he is mellow and goes with the flow pretty easily.  I needed a baby like him with my busy boys.  He is at such a fun age.  It makes me smile as he tries to talk.  His ramblings are so cute.  I love his little bow-legged walk and run.  Honestly, I can't get enough of him at this age.  He loves to be around his brothers.  Whenever they are watching something and laughing he always laughs along with them.  All the while looking around at each of them with this look of,  "I'm one of the big boys too!"  He loves to play with cars and loves to be outside more than anything else.  He is in nursery and is doing alright with that.  Drop of and even pick up are a little teary but I think the in between is pretty good.  They never have to bring him to us so I take that as a sign he isn't screaming his head off the entire time.  His blond hair and blue eyes make me melt.  Sometimes in the car I'll just look back at him, because he's so cute, and he'll give me this little smile that makes me want to kiss his little cheeks off.  He is truly a joy to have in our family. :)

Our life in a nutshell right now.  Though a little trying at time we know we are blessed and are grateful for each of our kids. :)

Great summary.
I can't wait till DRu's wrist heals so he can get back into mountain biking and take Masaru.
